About Public Holidays in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's holidays blend national memory, Christian faith and the legacy of its liberation struggle. Independence Day on April 18 marks 1980, and Heroes' Day and the Defence Forces Day in August honour the fallen of the liberation war. Christmas, Easter and Good Friday anchor the Christian calendar, and the country's famous stone sculpture tradition and the Mbira music culture give its festivals a distinctly Zimbabwean character. The traditional rain-making ceremonies of the Shona people continue alongside the official calendar.
