About Public Holidays in Zambia
Zambia's holidays reflect its Christian heritage, its peaceful history and its powerful cultural traditions. Independence Day on October 24, the day the country was renamed from Northern Rhodesia in 1964, is the great national celebration, and the country observes Christmas, Easter, Good Friday and the New Year. Heroes' Day and Unity Day in July honour the independence struggle and national unity, and the famous Kuomboka ceremony of the Lozi people — when the king moves by barge to higher ground — is the year's most distinctive cultural event.
In January 2033 there is 1 public holiday: New Year's Day. In 2033, Zambia observes 18 public holidays including 18 national, of which 6 fall on a weekend.
