About Public Holidays in Vanuatu
Vanuatu, a Melanesian archipelago, celebrates a holiday year that honours both its colonial past and its remarkable cultural diversity. Independence Day on July 30, marking the 1980 separation from the Anglo-French condominium, is the national centrepiece, and the country's famous land-diving ceremony — the precursor of bungee jumping — takes place during the yam season festivals. The coconut tree is celebrated on its own day in July, and Christmas, Easter and the New Year complete a calendar of more than one hundred distinct languages and traditions.
In 2024, Vanuatu observes 14 public holidays including 14 national, of which 1 falls on a weekend.
