About Public Holidays in Uruguay
Uruguay, one of South America's most secular nations, keeps a holiday calendar heavy on civic commemorations and light on religious observance. Independence Day on August 25, the 1825 declaration, anchors the year, and Carnival — the longest in the world at up to forty days — features the candombe drumming of Afro-Uruguayan heritage. Holy Week is officially 'Tourism Week', reflecting the country's separation of church and state, while Christmas and Epiphany are also known by their secular names. The 'Mate' culture gives every holiday gathering a distinctly Uruguayan warmth.
In May 2028 there is 1 public holiday: Workers' Day. In 2028, Uruguay observes 5 public holidays including 5 national, of which 1 falls on a weekend.
