About Public Holidays in Namibia
Namibia's holidays reflect its German colonial past, its long independence struggle and its deep Christian faith. Independence Day on March 21 marks 1990, and Heroes' Day on August 26 honours the fallen of the liberation war. The country observes Christmas, Easter and Ascension with German-influenced traditions, and the two Eids are observed for the Muslim community. The Windhoek Carnival in March and the country's German Christmas markets give Namibia's calendar a distinctly European flavour in an African setting.
