Latvia's holidays blend Christian feasts, Baltic folk traditions and the memory of independence. November 18 marks the 1918 proclamation of the republic and May 4 the 1990 restoration of independence, both celebrated with candlelit ceremonies. The midsummer festival of Jāņi on June 23-24 is the country's most joyous holiday, with bonfires, cheese, beer and singing through the shortest night.
