About Public Holidays in Ελλάδα
Greece's holidays are dominated by the Orthodox Christian calendar, which follows the Julian computation for movable feasts. Easter is the year's supreme celebration, with candlelit processions on Good Friday, the midnight resurrection on Saturday and roasted lamb on Sunday, often extending through Easter Monday and the 'Love Sunday' of Saint Thomas. Independence Day on March 25 also marks the Annunciation, and Ohi Day on October 28 honours the 1940 refusal to the Axis. Christmas, Epiphany with its cross-diving ritual, and the Dormition of the Virgin in August complete the year.
In August 2024 there is 1 public holiday: Assumption Day. In 2024, Greece observes 12 public holidays including 12 national, of which 1 falls on a weekend.
