About Public Holidays in United Kingdom
The United Kingdom's holidays are shaped by the 'bank holiday' system, named for the days when banks close. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each keep slightly different sets, with regional dates such as Saint Andrew's Day in Scotland and Saint Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland. Easter and Christmas anchor the religious year, while the late-May and late-August bank holidays create popular long weekends. New Year's Eve is famously celebrated with fireworks across London, and the 'Christmas season' now extends into an extra bank holiday when dates permit.
In 2024, United Kingdom observes 8 public holidays including 8 national, of which 0 fall on a weekend.
