About Public Holidays in Suomi
Finland's holidays reflect Lutheran tradition and the extremes of the Nordic year. Midsummer, the Friday and Saturday around the solstice, is the country's most important celebration, with saunas, bonfires and the midnight sun, while the month of May welcomes spring with Vappu, the May Day carnival that is also Labour Day. Christmas Eve is the central family celebration, with the declaration of Christmas peace in Turku, and Easter keeps a quieter, candlelit character. Independence Day on December 6 is marked with blue-and-white candles in windows and the presidential ball.
In May 2025 there are 2 public holidays: May Day, Ascension Day. In 2025, Finland observes 15 public holidays including 15 national, of which 5 fall on a weekend.
