Egypt's holidays blend Islamic faith, Coptic Christian tradition and the memory of the ancient pharaonic past. Sham el-Nessim, the spring festival celebrated on the Monday after Coptic Easter, is Egypt's oldest holiday, dating back to the pharaohs and celebrated by Egyptians of every faith with salted fish and onions. The two Eids and the Islamic New Year follow the lunar calendar, while Coptic Christmas on January 7 is an official holiday. National days mark the 1952 revolution on July 23 and the 1973 October War victory on October 6.
