About Public Holidays in Costa Rica
Costa Rica's holidays reflect a peaceful, environmentally minded nation with a strong Catholic tradition. Independence Day on September 15 is celebrated across Central America with lantern parades on the eve, while Guanacaste Day on July 25 honours the province's annexation. Good Friday is the year's most solemn holiday, and Christmas brings the traditional 'tamalada' family gatherings. The country abolished its army in 1948, so military parades are absent; instead, holidays often centre on families, beaches and the pura vida spirit.
In December 2028 there is 1 public holiday: Christmas Day. In 2028, Costa Rica observes 9 public holidays including 9 national, of which 1 falls on a weekend.
