About Public Holidays in Australia
Australia's holidays blend British heritage, Indigenous memory and a distinctive summer rhythm. Australia Day on January 26 is the country's most debated public holiday, while Anzac Day on April 25, honouring the Gallipoli landing, is observed with dawn services across the nation. Christmas falls in midsummer, giving Australian families a barbecue-and-beach celebration, and the Easter long weekend opens the school holidays. Each state keeps its own mix of Labour Day dates and local celebrations such as the Melbourne Cup, Victoria's famous horse-race holiday.
In 2028, Australia observes 7 public holidays including 7 national, of which 1 falls on a weekend.
